Best Matagalpa Attractions

The region of Matagalpa is among the most picturesque tourist destinations in all of Nicaragua.  Located a couple hours outside of Managua, the lush green hills surround the city of Matagalpa frame the city beautifully. With the rain forest covered mountains, the waterfalls along the mountainsides and the nearby coffee plantations that line much of the hills, there is much to do for you adventurous visitors.

Selva Negra is one of the jewels of Matagalpa.  Located outside of town further up the mountains, Selva Negra is both a coffee plantation and an eco-lodge located in the middle of a cloud rain forest.  Hiking is available to be able to go out and enjoy all the lush green surrounding the premises.  There is also a large amount of wild life, especially for whose enjoy bird watching.  This coffee farm is definitely a destination for nature lovers.  After finishing up enjoying all the outdoor activities, you can top off a great day with a good cup of coffee and dessert inside the lodge.

The Rio Santa Maria Waterfalls is just a 15-minute drive from Matagalpa.  It is a great attraction for those who want to spend the day exploring the different waterfalls in the area.  On the hot days these waterfalls can be a great place to cool down by taking a dip in the water.  Other nearby waterfalls include Salto Escondido and Salto Seco.  “Salto” is the Spanish word for waterfall.

Cerro Arenal Natural Reserve is one of many Nicaraguan natural reserves located in a cloud forest at an altitude of over 5,000 feet.  Because of the year-round rain the reserve stays lush and beautiful regardless of the time of year.  The natural reserve is ideal for hiking where visitors will be able to see all kinds of wildlife in the flora and fauna.  There are monkeys, birds, butterflies and much more.
