Best Nicaraguan Turtle Beach – La Flor

The La Flor Wildlife Reserve is one of the most unique beaches in Nicaragua.  It is located south of San Juan del Sur where much of the beach development is happening along the coastline.

Best Beaches in Nicaragua La Flor
La Flor has been able to maintain its status as a natural reserve.  The reason it is a natural reserve is because it is one of the few locations in Nicaragua where Olive Ridley turtles lay their eggs.

Best Beaches in Nicaragua La FlorIn many beaches around Nicaragua whenever a turtle comes ashore to lay eggs on the sand, almost immediately a local will come out and claim the eggs.  Turtle eggs are considered a delicacy in some circles.  That is why it is great to have a beach like La Flor where the turtles and their eggs are protected.  A few times a year hundreds of turtles migrate back to the La Flor beach to lay their eggs.  Approximately fifty days later the eggs hatch and out come thousands of baby turtles making their way back to the water. Very few of these turtles will actually survive with many getting eaten by predators and some never even make it to the water.  It is a beautiful thing to see and experience observing nature doing its thing.

There is a fee to enter the park but if the eggs are hatching it is definitely worth the price of admission.  Visitors can also look in to possibly camping out on the beach if they want to be really adventurous.
