Daniel Ortega Speech at Nicaraguan Presidential Inauguration

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega was sworn back in for his second consecutive term as president.  The ceremony was attended by many world leaders.

The guests of honor included Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez, Iran’s Ahmadinejad and Prince Felipe of Spain.  One notable leader missing was Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla.  Chinchilla has refused to accept Nicaragua’s election results.  Surprisingly the US embassy in Managua sent a representative to attend the ceremony.

The guests of honor at the head table as well as the thousands of Nicaraguans attending looked on as Ortega gave his speech.  In his speech Ortega covered a variety of different subjects.  He blasted the US for its occupation of Afghanistan, Iraq and the murder of world leaders Saddam Hussein and Moammar Gadhafi.  In referencing Hussein he wished that he rest in peace.  He also blamed the US for its actions against Iran saying Iran was only seeking atomic energy for peaceful purposes.  By blasting the US Ortega is sending a message of solidarity to those who were his guests of honor.  The US embassy has not responded to Ortega’s speech and it is doubtful they will because they’ve heard similar speeches by Ortega in the past.
