Granada Horseback Riding Tours

Painted Pony Horse Tours allows you to see Nicaragua in a whole new way. You will be picked up in Granada and taken to Diriomo, just 20 minutes away.

Horseback Riding in Nicaragua

There, on Finca Genizaro, you will start your ride. The farm is a true working farm and has amazing 300 year old trees on the property. You will be given a horse, according to your riding experience as well as your size. The horses are well trained, healthy and beautiful. You will also get a short lesson in the do’s and don’t's so that you are comfortable and at ease in the saddle.

The tour takes you through two of Nicaragua’s “pueblos blancos” or white towns, Diriomo and Diria. Diriomo is know as the town of witches which is an interesting story told to you by your guide. In Diria, as you pass through town and the central park, you will notice that you are slowly climbing. Once you hit the dirt road on the far side of town, you will see the national bird, the Guardabarranco or Mot-Mot, swooping through the trees. You guide will also point out the many different plants and trees, many producing things like coffee, cocoa and bananas.

Once you arrive at the rim of the volcano, you could see a troop of Howler monkeys swinging from tree to tree. The Laguna de Apoyo is a beautiful pristine lake that is situated inside an extinct volcano. The water temperatures are about 83 degrees year round and the waters of the laguna are thought to be medicinal due to the high content of minerals from the volcanic rock. The views are stunning as you ride along the rim. You are able to see Granada, Lake Nicaragua and the Mombacho Volcano as well as the blue waters of the laguna.

You will stop at a local restaurant, Mirador de Pollo, owned by Don Jose, or better known as “Pollito”, Little Chicken. Here you will enjoy a cold drink and some local fare. It has been said by many that they have the very best fried plantains and fried chicken in the area. This is also a great place for photos and to enjoy the cool breeze off the lake.

The tour is approximately three hours long. Painted Pony can accommodate people of all ages, with or without experience. The tour is $35.00 per person and includes transportation. Closed toed shoes are recommended as well as long pants. Insect repellent and sunscreen is also recommended. For reservations, you can email granadalife@gmail.com or call 8881-3758.
