While it is fun visiting Nicaragua, there are a lot of things that you have to do if you plan on taking an international trip. You have to make sure that you have your passport ready and up to date and expires no sooner than six months after your trip. You should try to familiarize yourself with the customs of the country you are visiting so that you do not feel so out of the loop. Learn about the local Nicaraguan food, history and learn some Spanish if possible. Bring cash on your trip. Dollars are accepted most places but it is best to exchange some of your dollars into cordobas. You can do it with a local money changer on the side of the road or inside a bank. Make sure you know the exchange rate beforehand to make sure you aren’t ripped off. Always count the money given to you as soon as you get it to make sure it is the right amount.

There are many places in Nicaragua that are great for vacation, Granada, San Juan del Sur, Ometepe, Rio San Juan, León and Corn Island. It is best to have most your trip set up ahead of time. Flight, hotels, rental car etc. Like in most places renting a car at the airport can cost you more than renting one in Managua. Renting a car gives you the advantage of exploring all of these exotic locations at your own pace. If there is a group going on the trip, renting a car can be fairly affordable by dividing the cost among those on the trip.

Most hotels in the tourist hot spots can help arrange tours to the nearby attractions. In Granada you can arrange a volcano tour, boat trip around the islands or zip line through the rain forest. In San Juan del Sur you can arrange trips neighboring beaches or hire someone to give you surf lessons. These tours will all add a cost to your trip but they are all more affordable than you would find anywhere else in the world including Costa Rica.

Choosing a hotel is all about preferences, and it is up to you to select one that you think fits your needs. Managua offers both, big chain hotels and smaller boutique hotels. Granada offers beautiful boutique hotels with gorgeous courtyards for guests to relax in. San Juan del Sur offers a wide variety of beach hotels both in town or on secluded beaches. Sometimes it is a good idea to book everything for your trip except the hotel, since last-minute booking can help you snag a very nice room for a very low price. You also run the risk of not getting the hotel of your choice.

A destination like Corn Island is best reached by taking the hour flight from the Managua Airport on La Costeña Airlines. Corn Island can also be reached by land and boat. You take bus from the market in Managua to Rama. From Rama you take a panga boat to Bluefields and from Bluefields you take another boat ride to Corn Island. This is an all day trip.

Planning a vacation thoroughly will prevent a lot of mishaps from occurring. While you want everything to be efficient and convenient, do not forget to have the best vacation ever. The tips here should have you well on your way to a vacation that is filled with pleasure and tons of fun.
