Popoyo is the surf break that put Nicaragua on the international surf map.  Most foreigners who have heard about surfing in Nicaragua over the last ten years are probably referring to Popoyo.  Popoyo is the most consistent surf break in Nicaragua.  The wave does well at all sizes and can go both directions.  Popoyo also has the advantage of numerous great breaks nearby including the Outer Reef where the big boys surf.  Even though Popoyo is further away from San Juan del Sur there are still a lot of locals that come to surf this wave.

Santana is a short drive from Popoyo and is also one of the most popular beaches in the area.  Santana is located right next to the private beach development Rancho Santana.  The wave is easily accessible to both guests in Rancho Santana and those coming in from the local town.  As a result there is usually a good sized crowd when this wave is at its best.
