Nicaragua and the United States have not always had the strongest relationship.  This has been the case even more so during the current Sandinista government and the one that governed the country in the 1980’s following the revolution.  Dating back decades and centuries there is a history of the US trying to impose its influence in Nicaragua.

In a letter written to the US government Ortega congratulating the United State’s on the historic date they were celebrating.  In his letter he even went on to quote some of the Declaration of Independence saying Nicaraguans agree that “all men are created equal, they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”  Nicaragua who gained its independence 190 years ago celebrates its independence from Spain in September.  After years of dysfunctional relationship maybe this is finally the turning point in the US-Nicaragua relations.
