Northern Nicaragua’s Miraflor Natural Reserve

If you are ever getting sick of the heat on the pacific side of Nicaragua consider a trip up the mountains for your next stop on your Nicaraguan site seeing tour.  Up in the mountains is a great option for eco-tourism, the Miraflor natural reserve.  It is located about 30 km away from the beautiful town of Esteli.  From Managua it is between a 3 to 4 hour drive.  It was declared a natural reserve in 1990 and covers over 200 square kilometers of wildlife, lush greenery, waterfalls, and coffee farms.

Miraflo Natural Reserve Park for Eco-Tourism

The park feels like it is always covered by the low hovering clouds.  Being there makes you feel as though you are in a movie setting.  The clouds covering the park keep everything lush and green.  Among the highlights of the park include the cloud forest, the wildlife, the orchid population, the organic coffee farm and many more things.  The biodiversity in the park is amazing.

The coffee farms are another highlight of the reserve.  The coffee grown is of an organic quality.  The altitude along with the cloud forest and the conditions of the reserve make for a perfect place to harvest coffee.  There are several communities on the park that house people that make a living off the land in the reserve.  One of the universities in Managua works with the park to make sure it stays up to ecological standards in regards to farming the land, especially the coffee.

If this sounds like something you are interested in, you will not regret the visit.  On the reserve you can arrange to get guided tours on areas of the reserve that interest you.  Whether you want to see the orchid population or participate in some bird watching, the Miraflor reserve is the perfect place.  You can also just take tours of the coffee farms and enjoy the views of the lush greenery and waterfalls that are within the park.  If you would like to fully immerse yourself in the experience, there are bamboo huts where guests can stay for $7 a night.  If you are looking for something different you can find a hotel in Esteli.  Do not hesitate to take the drive up the Nicaraguan mountains.  You will be able to experience another side of Nicaragua that you cannot find on the pacific.  You will definitely not regret it!
